Miriam Akavia
Miriam Akavia (b. 1927; Krakow, Poland) went through the Holocaust in
the Krakow ghetto, Plaszow, and Auschwitz and later to Bergen-Belsen.
In 1946 she arrived in Israel via Sweden. Akavia, a licensed nurse, also
studied Literature and History at Tel Aviv University. She worked at the
Jewish Agency, and served as Israel's social and cultural attache in Budapest
and Stockholm. She began publishing in 1975, describing her childhood
and her Holocaust and post-war experiences. Miriam Akavia translates Polish
literature into Hebrew and Hebrew into Polish. She was awarded the 1978
Yad Va-Shem Prize and several other prizes in Israel, Poland and Germany.
